Regardless of shooting with a smartphone, compact camera or the latest DSLR model with all the bells and whistles, here are some simple tips from Ranfurly based, award-winning landscape photographer Janyne Fletcher to help you nail the perfect shot….

Understand your camera

  • It might sound radical but busting out the instructions for your camera is a great idea.
  • Seek out some good quality videos on YouTube about your specific camera or method of shooting.
  • It all takes time and practice so being familiar before you visit is a great start.

Move your feet and slow down

Move Your Feet and Yourself

  • You will be amazed what a difference a few steps left and right and up and down makes! Zoom in and out to find the part of the landscape that tells the story you are looking for.

Slow down and explore the back roads

  • If you have a vehicle or are prepared to ride your bike off the main trails then there is so much to be discovered.
  • Get off the highway and take the back roads where you can, slow down to see things and pull over when and where you feel like it - just look out for ditches and hazards hidden in the grass!

Look for a story

  • A beautiful picture of snow-capped dramatic mountains is lovely, but what about looking for a little deeper meaning or a story?
  • For example, a gorgeous graphic shape contained within a mountain range, or an old building or sign that evokes a sense of history or isolation.
