MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE CLUTHA GOLD CHARITABLE TRUST

At a well-attended ceremony in Waihola, the Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust officially opened the new Clutha Gold Trail extension from Lawrence to Waihola on 25th August.

Extending from Lawrence to Waihola, the new trail will connect the existing network of trails in Central Otago and Clutha. It provides more opportunities for people to experience the stunning landscapes and heritage of the region. With a total length now of 135km from Lake Roxburgh to Waihola, the grade 1 – 2 trail offers a diverse range of experiences for cyclists and walkers, allowing them to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and historical significance of the area.

A recent Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) evaluation of the 22 Great Rides of Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trails found that as well as providing health benefits for those using the trails, with many cyclists reporting an improved sense of wellbeing and mental health, that the cycle trail users brought an estimated direct economic contribution to regions of more than $950 million. It is hoped that the extension of the Clutha Gold Trail will provide both social and economic benefits to the region and communities along the trail.

This project would not have been possible without the unwavering support of local landowners who generously shared their land to create this remarkable trail. Their contribution goes beyond just providing a path; it’s about creating a space for people to connect with nature, learn about the area’s history, and enjoy recreational activities in a unique setting.

While the Clutha Gold Trail is classified as Grade 2, the section from Milton to Circle Hill Road will be temporarily classified as Grade 4, due to access being via the State Highway as construction of two bridges is completed. This interim arrangement ensures users’ safety until the completion of the feature bridges that will enhance the journey and experience of the trail. Users of this section of trail should be aware of hazards and exercise caution on SH1.

The Trust also extends its thanks to key partners, stakeholders, community groups, individuals, sponsors, and volunteers for their invaluable contribution. And to funders including the Provincial Growth Fund, NZ Cycle Trails – Extension and Enhancement Fund, Clutha District Council, Otago Community Trust, Clutha Development, private donations and local community service groups including Lawrence Lions and Milton Rotary.

The completion of this trail extension marks the culmination of years of hard work, planning, and collaboration. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved together and cannot wait to share this incredible experience with you all.
