Resource Consent Granted for Cromwell Mountain Bike Park
Central Otago mountain bikers set to have some new trails to shred!
Central Otago mountain bikers can look forward to new biking adventures on the horizon. The Central Otago District Council recently granted resource consent to the Cromwell Mountain Bike Club for the creation of the Shannon Farm Bike Park near Ripponvale Road. This exciting development has been a long-cherished dream of the local mountain biking community.
The Shannon Farm Bike Park will span 65.6 hectares of land near the Shannon Farm lifestyle subdivision. The project aligns with the New Zealand Cycle Trail Design Guide, incorporating input from Elevate Trail Building. It will feature a diverse network of trails catering to riders of all skill levels, as well as walkers, while preserving the unique Central Otago landscape and minimizing visual disruption.
Remarkably, this park won't operate as a commercial venture; it will be freely accessible to the public, irrespective of their club membership status. Cromwell Mountain Bike Club President Alex Bartrum highlighted the park's significance, addressing the lack of mountain biking trails in the area. He expressed the club's aim to provide world-class mountain biking trails conveniently close to town, reducing the need for residents to travel to Queenstown, Wanaka, or Alexandra.
Collaborating with Shannon Farm landowners and developers NZ Cherry Corp (Leyser) LP, the club secured a commitment to maintaining the recreational area even if the property changes hands. An underpass connecting the bike park and subdivision to Cromwell township, ensuring safety for pedestrians and cyclists, will be constructed by the developers.
With regulatory hurdles cleared, the club is now focusing on fundraising efforts. Elevate Trails is currently working on the concept design and cost estimate to approach potential donors and trail builders. Community involvement and support are crucial, with opportunities for individuals to contribute to the park's development through the club's fundraising initiatives.
Anticipated to commence major construction next year, the Shannon Farm Bike Park holds great promise for local riders. In the meantime, dedicated club members continue their hands-on work in creating trails near Bannockburn Inlet, with the official opening of stage one imminent. The club is deeply appreciative of the support it has received from various organisations and individuals since its formation in 2019.
